First, good intentions do not overcome economic reality. Marxism promised abundance, equality and liberation, but it repeatedly collided with the fact that an economy cannot simply be commanded into efficiency. Market prices, profit and loss, and private property perform indispensable coordinating functions... 

Second, concentrating economic power tends to concentrate political power. If the state controls property, employment, production and distribution, ordinary people become dependent on those who control the state. The attempt to enforce economic equality therefore tends to create an unusually powerful ruling class - one that commands both material resources and political authority. There is no clean separation between economic and political power... 

Third, a theory that explains everything can end up explaining away every failure. When Marxist predictions did not materialise, the response was often that the country in question was not truly socialist, that external enemies were to blame, or that the revolution had been betrayed. This is a broader intellectual warning. Any ideology structured so that no evidence can count against it has ceased to be a testable account of the world. It has become a closed system.

These lessons remain relevant long after the fall of the regimes that illustrated them. They caution against utopian economics, against the fusion of economic and political power and against theories that are immune to refutation. History does not always persuade. But it has left a clear record for those willing to read it.

Dan Williams returns in this essay to his already well-known idea that we humans hold false beliefs because they are socially adaptive—that is, because the group rewards us for having them.

He posits that people often take it for granted that we convince ourselves of comforting lies: that we confuse what we want to be true with what is true. Williams says that this is, in essence, a myth. Motivated reasoning exists, but it doesn't work that way. Although we often believe what we want to believe, we rarely believe what we want to be true. The metaphor of time as a river that flows inexorably forward is misleading, argues cultural theorist Timotheus Vermeulen. Perhaps wings make for morbid proverbs only because we ‘people’ do not have them. And what if a cockroach-people can swarm their way out with their wings? What if winged insects scare the sting out of (powerful) people?

Insects have long featured in the political lives of men, whether as wartime ammunition or as the scourge of disease.1 Recent events in Indian history have brought them back into political discourse – this time, through the online emergence of a protest movement under the name of ‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (CJP; meaning ‘Cockroach People’s Party’).
